Information about the DataDisk CD-ROM [ TOP ]

The CD-ROM contains all the data sets used in the book's examples, exercises, and case studies. It also includes the Focus Database, a database that was obtained by randomly selecting 500 Arizona State University sophomores. Seven variables are considered for each student: sex, high-school GPA, SAT math score, cumulative GPA, SAT verbal score, age, and total hours completed. Compatible with PC and Macintosh, DataDisk is packaged with every copy of the book.

All of the data sets from the DataDisk CD-ROM are available on this web site.

This note identifies the acronyms used for the top-level directories on DataDisk CD:
ES4 = Elementary Statistics, fourth edition
IS5 = Introductory Statistics, fifth edition

Please refer to both the book and these ReadMe files, which are also available on the DataDisk CD-ROM, for more specific instructions on how to use these datasets.




Notes on Importing Text Data [ TOP ]

On pages 16-18 of your text are instructions for storing data by importing from DataDisk CD. These instructions apply only to numeric data, that is, data consisting of number characters (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) and the missing value symbol *.

If a column contains any character other than number characters or *, it is classified by Minitab as text (or alpha) data. To store text data by importing from DataDisk CD, we can use a Minitab format statement. In the simplest case, when a single column of text data is to be stored, we need only use the format item A, which stands for alpha.

For example, suppose that we want to store the data on political party affiliations from Table 2.10 on page 73 in a column named POLITIC. Noting that each observation consists of a single letter, we use the format A1, where the "1" tells Minitab to read the first character in each line of the data file into the column. So we proceed as follows:

1 Choose File > Other Files > Import Special Text...

2 Type POLITIC in the Store data in column(s) text box

3 Click the Format... button

4 Select the User-specified format option button

5 Click in the User-specified format text box and type A1

6 Click OK

7 Click OK

8 Type E:\ES4\Example\Tb2-10 in the File name text box OR Type E:\IS5\Example\Tb2-10 in the File name text box

9 Click Open

Instructions for importing data files
from DataDisk CD-ROM into Minitab for the Macintosh

If you have Word 6.0 installed, start here:

1) Open Word 6.0.
2) From the File Menu, select Open.
3) Select the file from the DataDisk that you want to open. Click the open button.
4) You should see the data in the Word window. From the File Menu, select Save As.
5) In the Save As window, select where you would like to save the file. Select the Save File Type As "text only" from the pull-down menu. Click the Save button.
6) At this point, you can either close the Word 6.0 window or Quit the Word 6.0 application. Note: When closing the Word window, you may be asked if you want to save changes. Click the No button.
7) Open Minitab.
8) From the File menu, select Import Text.
9) In the Import Text window, enter the column names as appropriate. Click OK. Note: If you know the data is not numeric (i.e. It contains letters, symbols, etc.), you may need to click on the Format button. Select Tab-delimited button and de-select Column names in the first row. Click OK.
10) Select the text file you just saved. Click the open button.

If you do not have Word 6.0 installed, start here:

1) Open Excel.
2) From the File menu, select Open.
3) Select the file from the DataDisk you want to open. Click the open button.
4) The Text Import Wizard Window opens. In step 1, select "Fixed Width" under Original Data Type. Click the Next button in the bottom right hand corner of the window.
5) In step 2, click the Next button.
6) In step 3, click the Finish button.
7) You should see the data in the spreadsheet. From the File menu, select Save As. Select the location where you would like to save the file. Select Save File Tye As "Text (Tab delmited)". Click Save button.
8) At this point, you can either close the Excel window or Quit the Excel application. Note: When closing the Excel window, you may be asked if you want to save changes. Click the No button.
8) Open Minitab.
9) From the File menu, select Import Text.
10) In the Import Text window, enter the column names as appropriate.
11) Click the Format button. In the Format window, select Tab-delimited. De-select Column names in first row. Click the OK button.
12) In the Text Import window, click the OK button.
13) Select the tab-delimited file you just saved. Click the Open button.
