infant The data shown in your text (Case Study) provide a window into a complex human problem. The global picture of infant mortality provides one of the best examples of how statistics can help us understand problems of human life, society, and progress.

The problem of infant mortality can be seen as a set of physiological, cultural, economic, racial and political problems. Around 1900, the rate of infant mortality in the United States was 150. Knowledge has helped to bring down that number. And knowledge (much of it gained through statistical techniques) will help to bring the rate down further.

The last part of the project provides you with a hands-on demonstration of a dynamic histogram. You will see how the choices you make when creating a histogram can change the way others perceive your data. You will also see some examples of "dangerous" graph types--graphs that you must create with care in order to give a truthful and valid representation of the data.
