This first project provides a short introduction to statistical thinking, using the data behind the sinking of the Titanic. Later projects go into more detail. In this project you will simply explore the project, interact with the demonstrations and animations, and see how statistics can be used to answer questions.
This project also explains how you can use the Internet Projects site, including how the site is structured. In each section, an introduction explains the section's purpose. You can also explore the notes on using this site for more information.
Humans are curious beings. We have developed many techniques to try to get at the how and why of things. Philosophy approaches the problem of truth with logic and thought; poetry and art with creative expression.
While the techniques used in statistics are different, the goal is similar. Statistics is both a collection of techniques and a way of thinking that approaches the problem of truth within the world of numbers. With statistics, we come closer to the how and why of things by making sense of data.
In this first Internet Project, you will become acquainted with the controversy and the data behind the Titanic disaster. You will be able to visit web sites from several locations, viewing and thinking about the data and facts presented there. You will also be able to see statistical demonstrations and animations that illustrate the concepts you cover in class.
