It's all too easy to fall into the student life of fast food and lounging, isn't it? With all you have going on, sometimes it's all you can do to grab a few snacks on the run. And you are probably wondering who has time for exercise. Well, taking care of yourself physically is essential to doing well in college. Eating correctly and exercising will keep your mind alert and allow you to do your best.

Exercise

If you are too busy to exercise, then you are just too busy. Since exercise is so important to your physical and mental states, try to find ways to squeeze it in as often as you can. Try walking across campus instead of riding the shuttle. Take walks with friends. Consider taking an aerobics or dance class. This allows you to have fun with friends and get in shape at the same time. Remember, not only will you look and feel great, but you will also lower your stress level and improve your outlook.

Nutrition

There is a bit of truth to the old adage that says you are what you eat. You cannot perform to the best of your ability if all you fuel your body with is high fat, low fiber food. Make sure your meals encompass selections from all four food groups, especially fruits and vegetables. Eat foods that are as close to their original state as possible. Try to stay away from greasy, highly processed food. Choose whole grains and beans whenever possible. Drink lots of water and less high-sugar, high-caloric soft drinks. Your body will thank you for it. If you have any questions, your school nutritionist or dietitian will be able to give you all the information you need.

Drinking

Drinking alcohol will negate all of the wonderful things you are trying to do for your body. Contrary to its image as a means of lowering your inhibitions, alcohol is actually a depressant that can slow down your bodily functions, especially the central nervous system. In addition, alcohol is a dehydrator, which means that it wreaks havoc on your skin, as well as on the rest of your body. The human body is composed of approximately 70% water, which is involved in nearly every function, including digestion, absorption, circulation, and excretion. Therefore, by dehydrating your body with alcohol, you are impeding the processes that depend on water. With the increase of drinking-related deaths on college campuses across the United States, it is important to be careful of binge drinking. So do your body a favour and find other ways of having a good time.
