CHAPTER 8
ANSWERS AND SUGGESTIONS

2. For a 100-step walk, the typical maximum excursion north or south will be 20 or 30. The walk will probably cross the axis, that is, return to the origin, several times, but it would not be unusual in ten random walks to see a few that spent the whole time on one side of the origin.

3. The 400-step walk typically has a larger maximum excursion: the average maximum distance from the axis will be around twice the value you observed for 100-step walks. There will probably be more axis crossings, but there may also be longer stretches when the graph stay above or below the axis.
