Isopropylthiogalactoside (IPTG)

IPTG is an artificial inducer of the Lac operon. It is used in laboratories to induce the lac operon because, in contrast to to allolactose, which is the natural inducer of the operon, IPTG cannot be hydrolyzed and broken down by the cell. Hence, its concentration does not change during an experiment.
