Phosphenolpyruvate (PEP) + HCO3- <=> Oxaloacetate + Pi

The anaplerotic reaction, which occurs in C4 plants and bacteria, uses the high energy phosphate of PEP to drive the incorporation of a carboxyl group into PEP to form oxaloacetate.
