A gene is the smallest unit of inheritance. Genes are encoded in the DNA of an organism. Though the term gene is generally used to refer to the coding sequence in DNA for a protein, occasionally the term is used to describe a section of DNA encoding a special RNA molecule, such as a tRNA gene.
