Breakout Sessions
Using Learning Themes to Link Developmental Studies
How can we encourage our developmental studies students to better appreciate reading,
writing, science and mathematics? Show them connections to the real world! Participants
in this session will work through classroom investigations designed to engage the
developmental mathematics student.
Improving Student Performance in Developmental Mathematics
This session will focus on techniques and activities that the presenter has found
to be effective in improving student performance in developmental mathematics. These
techniques include creative ways to handle student's anxieties, learning styles
and even a math song.
Teaching/Learning Literacy Strategies
Cognitive Domain discussion/activities focus on revealing to students "teaching/learning
literacy strategies" based on structure found at the core of every curriculum. Affective
Domain discussion/activities focus on "Finding the TurnOn!" to inspire, motivate the
teaching/learning process by Nurturing Self Actualization and Modeling Self Actualization.
Confidence to Competence: Improving The Learning Atmosphere In The Writing Classroom
With writing, confidence is the first step towards competence. Students need a
classroom where they can feel comfortable asking questions. This presentation will
offer some common sense suggestions to help make your classroom a better place for
your students and for you.
The Virtual Math Lab: On-line Courses and Assessment
With the increasing demand for on-line courses and assessment, mathematics educators are
in need of good tools that will help them develop such resources quickly and easily.
This session will review several excellent web-based applications that Addison-Wesley has
developed for both instructors and students. Foremost among them is MyMathLab, an
on-line teaching and learning tool designed to accompany all major Addison-Wesley
mathematics textbooks.
Reading Roadtrip and Longman Writer's Warehouse
Reading Roadtrip 3.0 is an interactive reading instructional program that combines
traditional reading and study skills instruction with interactive technology
and modern approaches to the reading process. The Longman Writer's Warehouse
is an online resource for college-level developing writers and is designed to
help students improve their writing skills and further their understanding of the
writing process.
