  Breakout Sessions

A. Teaching Statistics
Mario Triola, Dutchess Community College, NY
What features make a statistics course effective? How important is the use of real data? Which technology should be used? What are recent changes in technology? Are projects important? Which topics can be omitted? These and other important issues facing statistics teachers will be discussed.

Mario Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics from Dutchess Community College in upstate New York, where he has taught statistics and other math courses for 30 years. He is the author of Elementary Statistics, now in its 10th edition. He is also the author of Essentials of Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83/84 Plus Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life, Elementary Business Statistics, Introduction to Technical Mathematics, and other textbooks.

B. Let's Ask the Usual Questions in an Unusual Manner
Elayn Martin Gay, University of New Orleans
It's possible to tweak the questions we normally ask our students so that a deeper understanding and more meaningful dialogue is accomplished. In this talk we'll explore these questions and other successful classroom strategies that not only students, but instructors find interesting.

An award-winning instructor and best-selling author, Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students in their quest for success. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation material for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in the Martin-Gay series. Elayn also pioneered the Chapter Test Prep Video to help students as they prepare for a test-their most teachable moment!

C. Math Study Skills: We've Tried EVERYTHING So You Don't Have To
Alan Bass, San Diego Mesa College
Mesa College was the 'hub' for the Math Study Skills intervention portion of the NSF-funded Pathways through Algebra project. While serving as the project leader, Alan Bass mentored five schools into Study Skills programs of different types and tracked the results for the different formats. During this session, Alan will share the six different formats used and give a frank assessment of how they worked (or failed). The formats vary from creating a one-unit course to workshops to using material in-class and more.

Alan Bass received his Master's degree in Math from University of North Carolina -Wilmington and started teaching college math in North Carolina. He has now been teaching in Southern California for 6 years. Being immediately drawn to the plight of developmental education at the community colleges, Alan took a position at San Diego Mesa College four years ago that would allow him to focus on improving the developmental algebra courses while helping to continue the development of a study skills program. Since then, he has been trying different approaches to implementing study skills and mentoring schools that want to get a similar program underway.

D. The Functions of the Learning POD
Tony Ayers, Developmental Math Lab Instructor, Collin County Community College
Deborah Baker, Associate professor of Math, Collin County Community College

This seminar will take the audience through all aspects of creating, issuing and using courses in MyMathLab for self-paced flex entry courses and traditional lecture courses. Also included will be an explanation on how we teach faculty and students to register in MML, various information about our Learning Pod Self-Paced flex entry courses, and other information associated with our uses of MML.

E. The Virtual Math Lab: A Track Record of Success
Terry Harris and Jacque Zautner, Pearson Technology Specialists
Greta Harris-Hardland, Tarrant County Community College NE
Theresa Evans, Odessa College

With large math enrollments and fewer resources, mathematics educators are increasingly asked to do more with less. Pearson's Technology applications help instructors develop quality web-based resources for traditional, online or hybrid classes quickly and easily. MyMathLab and MathXL, the most widely used online teaching and learning applications for developmental and collegiate math courses, include tutorials, homework, testing and assessment. Additional topics can include TestGen, a test-creation program that allows tests to be exported to and delivered on-line, Digital Video Tutors, problem-specific tutorial videos on CD-ROM or DVD; and a free, two-way tutoring service available by toll-free phone, email, and fax.

1: Introduction to MyMathLab - for instructors that have not used MyMathLab before
This introductory workshop is designed to give participants an overview of MyMathLab from a student's perspective, as well as instruction in setting up their first MyMathLab course. Participants will learn about the main components of the MyMathLab management system, along with basic customization techniques.

2: Intermediate MyMathLab - for instructors that are using or have used MyMathLab
This intermediate workshop will show you how to perform additional customizations to your MyMathLab course. Topics will include the new announcements manager, prerequisites, gradebook, study plan, Test Gen, and how to effectively manage multiple sections of your course.

F. TestGen
Susan Fife, Houston Community College
This workshop is designed to give participants an overview of TestGen, as well as instruction in creating a TestGen test. In addition, participants will learn about the different formats available for presenting tests to their students including uploading into MyMathLab.

G. Special Lunchtime Presentation: Prerequisite Assessment of Skills for Success
Edward Bock, Collin County Community College
The philosophy and implementation of a spring 2008 pilot program called PASS (Prerequisite Assessment of Skills for Success) for incoming College Algebra and Calculus I students as part of the faculty role in academic advising to increase retention.
