8:30 to 9:00 – Continental Breakfast & Registration

9:00 to 9:45 - Introduction
In this short introduction we will define active learning as used in the life science classroom. We will present data on how this educational model can increase student performance and promote student engagement while providing the instructor with formative evaluations.

9:45 to 10:45 – Making the Transition
During this session we will demonstrate quick techniques that can be easily implemented in to any classroom with any number of students. Participants will learn through experience by working with fellow instructors.

10:45 to 11:00 - Break

11:15 to 12:00 - Discussion
Participants are encouraged to share their Active Learning experiences: what worked, what didn’t work, and lessons learned.

12:00 to 1:00 - Lunch Provided by Pearson Arts and Sciences

1:00 to 2:15 - Best Practices: Using "Clickers"
In this session we will explore at principles of course design and how active learning can be incorporated throughout the term including the use of Classroom Response Systems ("clickers") and other technologies.

2:15 to 2:30 - Break

2:30 to 3:30 - Facilitating Learning Through Problem Solving
In this afternoon segment we will demonstrate more advanced active learning techniques. Facilitators will utilize small group exercises, review learning objectives and touch upon Just-in-Time teaching methods.

3:00 to 4:00 - Wrap-up and synthesis
We will wrap up the day with a look at natural next steps for participants, review new ideas, discuss how to assign active learning homework to students and talk about assessment.
