Frederic Martini builds on his best-selling text by enhancing the award-winning art program, improving the clarity of the text, and adding an elegant, reader-friendly design to the Seventh Edition. Every student package automatically includes Martini’s Atlas of the Human Body, the A&P Applications Manual, the InterActive Physiology CD-ROM, the Anatomy 360 CD-ROM, and access to The Anatomy & Physiology Place companion website and MyA&P. Convenient references help students seamlessly integrate each component into their study routine and soar through key concepts and applications. Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, Seventh Edition now incorporates Anatomy 360, an engaging new anatomy media supplement, to create a powerful, integrated learning system. Along with enhancements to its award-winning art program and time-saving pedagogy, the coordination between narrative discussions and corresponding art has been tightened to improve clarity. The clear, concise explanations lead students through complex processes, helping them keep sight of the big picture without getting lost in the details.

 Award-winning art and photo program:

  • Navigator Figures are “big picture” overviews that appear at the start of discussions of complex physiological processes. Similar to a roadmap with a highlighted path, the Navigator Figures are repeated at appropriate intervals in the discussion, breaking the process into clear, easy-to-follow steps.
  •  Compound Art Figures provide students with multiple views of the same structure, typically pairing an artist's drawing with a cadaver photograph taken by renowned biomedical photographer Ralph Hutchings. This approach allows students to compare the illustrator's interpretations with photos of the actual structure as it may be seen in the laboratory or operating room. Figures are also cross-referenced to related, large-format photographs and scans in Martini's Atlas of the Human Body.
  •  “Stepped” Art Figures break down multifaceted processes into step-by-step illustrations that coordinate with the author’s narrative descriptions.   These easy-to-follow sequences in the book are also featured in the new Media Manager CD-ROM set for instructor’s to use in classroom presentations.
  • Macro-to-Micro Views help students bridge the gap between familiar and unfamiliar structures of the body by sequencing anatomical views from whole organs to their smaller parts. A typical illustration might combine a simple orientation diagram (indicating where an organ or structure is located in the human body) with a large, vivid painting of the structure, a corresponding sectional view, and a photomicrograph.

Time-saving navigation tools:

  • Concept Links, signaled with blue chain link icons, alert students to material that is related to, or builds upon, previous discussions. Each link refers students to a page number for quickly reviewing the relevant material from an earlier chapter.
  • Figure Locator Dots are placeholders that appear next to every figure reference in the narrative. These visible yet unobtrusive red dots help students return to reading after viewing a table or figure.
  • End-of-Chapter, 3-Level Learning System helps build student confidence and understanding through a logical progression from factual questions to conceptual problems to analytical exercises. The variety of questions also gives instructors flexibility in assigning homework from the text. The 3-level learning system is carried through in review exercises on The Anatomy & Physiology Place companion website and in the print Study Guide.

  • Superb art program is improved and includes re-designed “stepped” art with clearer labels and arrows, more consistent and logical formatting for process art and macro-to-micro views, re-designed embryology summaries, and more realistic treatment (illustration and photo combinations) for organ overviews.
  • New Unit Opener pages (6 total in book) list and briefly describe the chapters included in the unit and establish the color, carried through in the book’s tabbing system, that organizes the unit’s chapters into meaningful groupings.
  • The new 100 Keys (100 total in book) offer important concepts and principles over the course of the chapters.  Marked by a key icon, the Keys are factual statements that function as organizers of central information in anatomy and physiology.
  • New InterActive Physiology Boxes (1 per IP module, 8 total in book) describe the modules of the IP CD-ROM and let students know how to use them. This is a visible boxed feature with title, text, and screen grab from the IP media. (The within-chapter text references to IP have been maintained).
  • Anatomy 360 CD-ROM features highly realistic images and animations to help students learn tough anatomical terms and concepts. The CD features rotatable images, interactive exercises, and self-assessment quizzes. Packaged with each new copy of the text
  • MyA&P, an online learning tool for students and course management system for instructors, is now packaged with the text. A reference to MyA&P is included once per chapter, reminding students to go to the site for review and practice.
