iGenetics: A Molecular Approach reflects the dynamic nature of modern genetics by emphasizing an experimental, inquiry-based approach with a solid treatment of many research experiments. The text is ideally suited for students who have had some background in biology and chemistry and who are interested in learning the central concepts of genetics.
Problem solving is a major feature of the text and students have the opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to a variety of problems at the end of each chapter. Pedagogical features such as “Principal Points,” at the beginning of each chapter, and “Keynotes,” strategically placed throughout the chapter, are useful learning tools.
The iGenetics CD-ROM and the companion website contain 25 activities and 59 narrated animations, all of which are based on text figures, to help students visualize complex processes and challenging concepts they encounter in the main text.
An intense developmental effort, along with numerous third-party reviews of both text and media, ensure the highest degree of accuracy.
- The text’s inquiry-based approach engages students in the process of science.
- Step-by-step examples of problem solving throughout the book represent a wide range of topics and difficulty levels.
- Pedagogy:
- Principal Points, appearing at the beginning of each chapter, alert students to key concepts.
- Keynotes, strategically placed throughout the chapter, summarize important ideas and allow students to check their progress.
- Summary Sections at the end of each chapter reinforce main ideas.
- Analytical Approaches to Solving Genetics Problems at the end of each chapter guide students step-by-step through the process of solving genetic problems.
- Material on recombinant DNA technology and the manipulation of DNA (Chapters 8, 9, and 10) provide students with in-depth coverage.
- Recombinant DNA Technology (Chapter 8) discusses how to clone DNA, how to make and screen recombinant DNA libraries, how to analyze genes and gene transcripts, how to sequence DNA, and how to amplify DNA using PCR.
- Applications of Recombinant DNA Technology (Chapter 9) describes how the molecular tools presented in the previous chapter can be applied to study biological processes, test for genetic disease mutations, isolate human genes, fingerprint DNA, develop gene therapy approaches, develop commercial products, and engineer plants genetically.
- Genomics (Chapter 10) assembles in one chapter an overview of the state-of-the-art analysis of genomes, including how genomes are sequenced completely, a summary of the properties of key genomes that have been sequenced, how genome sequences are analyzed, and how transcriptional and translational profiles can be analyzed for many genes simultaneously.
- Numerous examples of human genetic disease help students understand the growing importance of molecular medicine.
- The Genetics Place – This online learning environment offers 25 activities, each with follow-up questions; 59 animations; and practice quizzes that can be graded and the results entered directly into the instructor’s grade book. A syllabus manager and a grade book function are provided as instructor resources. A complimentary, one-year access code is provided with every new book.
- iGenetics CD-ROM, packaged with each copy of the text, includes all of the student resources found on the website.
- Suggested Reading sections contain references to papers that were key to the development of concepts, as well as references to current research in the areas being discussed.
- A new chapter, Genetic Analysis of Development (Chapter 21), includes the major model organisms: fly, worm, plant, and mouse, with discussions that extend to human systems. There is also treatment of sex determination within the context of development.
- Extensive coverage of gene mapping is now provided in two chapters. Advanced topics such as tetrad analysis, mitotic recombination, and classical mapping of human genes are segregated into their own chapters for more thorough coverage. In addition, FISH and Radiation Hybrids have been added.
- Earlier coverage of chromosomal mutations ties the classical sections closer together, helping to wrap up the eukaryotic principles of heredity and adding more human applications and examples of human disease.
- DNA mutation and repair now follow DNA structure for a more logical flow of information.
- An update of genome analysis, with reduced coverage of sequencing, provides a greater focus on what we are learning from analysis.
- Molecular coverage integrates Mendelian sections where appropriate.
- The Genetics Place website, www.geneticsplace.com , features two new activities and eight new animations, along with updated quizzes for each chapter. In addition, all existing activities and animations from the first edition have been heavily reviewed and revised to ensure their accuracy and pedagogical effectiveness.

Peter J. Russell received his B.S. in Biology from University of Sussex in 1968 and his Ph.D. in Genetics from Cornell University in 1972. He then joined the Biology faculty of Reed College in 1972 where he is currently Professor of Biology. Russell teaches an upper-division genetics and molecular biology lecture/laboratory course, the genetics section of the introductory biology course, an advanced seminar course in yeast virology, and advises senior thesis research students. He is also the author of a number of successful genetics textbooks.
He is currently studying the molecular genetics of the replication of double-stranded (ds) RNA viruses found in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The research goals are to define in vivo the cis-acting sequences that are required for viral RNA packaging into capsids and for genome replication, and to identify and characterize any yeast gene products required for virus propagation. His earlier research involved Neurospora RNA synthesis and the organization of and regulation of the number of ribosomal RNA genes, and nitrogen metabolism in the pathogenic dimorphic yeast Candida albicans.

Discovering Genomics is the first genomics text that combines web activities and case studies with a problem-solving approach to teach upper-level undergraduates and first-year graduate students the fundamentals of genomic analysis. More of a workbook than a traditional text, Discovering Genomics, Second Edition allows students to work with real genomic data in solving problems and provides the user with an active learning experience. The companion website at www.aw-bc.com/geneticsplace is regularly updated to keep up with changes to online databases.
The Second Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to incorporate the latest scientific findings on popular topics such as disease-causing organisms and genetic defects. Case study chapters have been placed throughout the book to tie real-life scenarios into the concepts that follow. Two of the book’s key pedagogical features, Discovery Questions and Math Minutes, have also been updated and expanded.
The interactive companion website has been reprogrammed with JMOL, the latest 3-D software used to view DNA structures.
Building on the proven strengths of Russell's step-by-step problem-solving approach, Essential iGenetics blends a classic, Mendel-first approach with modern molecular coverage. This easy to read introduction to genetics presents full coverage of the subject in a brief and manageable format. The text covers basic genetics principles, with balanced coverage of Mendel, historical experiments, and cutting-edge chapters on Genome Analysis and Molecular Evolution. Students develop and apply critical thinking skills as they work step-by-step through a number of solved genetics problems. Students can also apply the principles and techniques learned to a variety of problems at the end of each chapter.
Fundamental Concepts of Bioinformatics is the first textbook co-authored by a biologist and computer scientist that is specifically designed to make bioinformatics accessible to undergraduates and prepare them for more advanced work. Students learn what programs are available for analyzing data, how to understand the basic algorithms that underlie these programs, what bioinformatic research is like, and other basic concepts. Information flows easily from one topic to the next, with enough detail to support the major concepts without overwhelming students. Problems at the end of each chapter use real data to help students apply what they have learned so they know how to critically evaluate results from both a statistical and biological point of view.
iGenetics: A Mendelian Approach reflects the dynamic nature of modern genetics by emphasizing an experimental, inquiry-based approach with a solid treatment of many research experiments.
