Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) was released in August of 2003. It

brought the power of .NET to developing Word and Excel applications. While

powerful, it was also lacking in some key features, and difficult to use. VSTO

2005 will be released as part of the Whidbey release. It will be incorporated in

the more advanced versions of Visual Studio .NET 2005, and will also be

available as a stand-alone product. It has corrected many of the major problems

with the first version, and is poised to experience a rapid growth in usage.

Coverage has been expanded to include Outlook and InfoPath in addition to

Word and Excel. This book is not only written by key members of the team

that developed VSTO 2005, but it will also be the first book available on

VSTO. The authors provide both an introduction to VSTO as well as a tutorial

ERIC CARTER is a lead developer on the Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) team at Microsoft. He helped invent, design, and implement many of the features that are in VSTO today. Previously at Microsoft he worked on Visual Studio for Applications, the Visual Studio Macros IDE, and Visual Basic for Applications for Office 2000 and Office 2003.

ERIC LIPPERT'S primary focus during his nine years at Microsoft has been on improving the lives of developers by designing and implementing useful programming languages and development tools. ADO.NET is Microsoft's toolset for working with data in any form. Sooner or later just about all Microsoft developers will need to come to grips with it. The first rev has not been as quickly adopted as some other areas of .NET, such as ASP.NET. However, Microsoft has made many substantial changes to version 2.0, to make it both more powerful and easier to use. This should help accelerate the use of ADO.NET, and the need for this book. We also expect this edition to sell much better than the previous edition, A First Look at ADO.NET and System.Xml v. 2.0 , 0321228391, because the previous book was released on an alpha version of the software with only limited distribution. This edition will be released day and date with the release of the general public beta, creating a much larger audience. The previous edition received glowing reviews; it created a new standard for beta books. This one should receive just as good if not better reviews, and will definitely receive more reviews as a result of the beta release. There may be one or two other books released on the beta, but none of them will have received the support from the ADO.NET team at Microsoft. Books on beta releases of important software have sold extremely well, even

though few contain much solid or original content. Microsoft approached AW,

and its authors, to produce a book on the beta release of the next version of

SQL Server, codenamed Yukon. To write the book, Microsoft is providing

early access to the SQL Server team, ensuring that this book is not a rehash of

readily available white papers and Web articles, but a resource of valuable,

useful information. Yukon will be the most significant update in years, and has

received tremedous advance buzz. The public beta will be made available in the

first half of this year, coinciding with the release of our title. There may be

other books publishing on the beta, but none will have had the Microsoft

Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) was released in August of 2003. It

brought the power of .NET to developing Word and Excel applications. While

powerful, it was also lacking in some key features, and difficult to use. VSTO

2005 will be released as part of the Whidbey release. It will be incorporated in

the more advanced versions of Visual Studio .NET 2005, and will also be
