Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I liked using the old Flylab for free. Why did you decide to charge for it?
A. There were two compelling reasons for going to a commercial site hosted by Pearson Education. First, maintaining the existing site is a huge drain of time and resources. To handle the traffic (which has more than doubled each year) there are six servers on-line now, with three more on order. With no revenue coming in on the free version, the university keeps spending money just to maintain the status quo and could not continue to do so. Second, working with a commercial partner has given the CSU access to resources which has allowed the development of additional modules. In addition to the new Java version of FlyLab, we now have DemographyLab, PedigreeLab, EvolutionLab, HemoglobinLab, TranslationLab, MitochondriaLab; LeafLab, CardioLab, EnzymeLab, PopulationGeneticsLab, and PopulationEcologyLab.
Q. How long does the subscription last?
A. 12 months from the date of activation.
Q. Why should I pay $110* for a site license when I get 10 labs for $5.25* each (net)?
A. Because students are not supposed to share login names and passwords, just as people are not meant to share software they purchase. By purchasing a site license, you receive a site license agreement allowing as many students to use one workstation as needed.
