CardioLab

"What's love to a broken heart?" Scientists can't give the answer to this song lyric, but now anyone can study how various factors affect the heart as well as the concept of homeostasis. This lab explores homeostasis via manipulation of the heart rate, arterial pressure, blood flow, and stroke volume. Students can examine realistic case studies to see how these variables interact to maintain homeostasis.

The purpose of this laboratory is to:

  • Understand homeostasis, particularly as it pertains to the cardiovascular system.

  • Investigate the relationships among heart rate, arterial pressure, blood flow, stroke volume, and peripheral resistance.

  • Simulate the effects of drugs and heart disorders on the physiology of the cardiovascular system.
