The following is a list of key articles and reports on adjuncts and adjunct related topics of interest to adjunct and part-time faculty in higher education.

The 2002 AHA-OAH Survey of Part-Time and Adjunct Faculty
Perspectives (October 2002)
Read the results of this survey, which was designed by the Joint AHA—OAH Committee on Part-time and Adjunct Employment, and distributed through the newsletters of the two organizations. In total, it received 276 responses, with 256 responses from historians currently employed either as adjuncts or part-timers.

AAUP Guidelines for Good Practice: Part-Time and Non- Tenure-Track Faculty
Summary of the American Association of University Professors’ policy regarding part-time and non-tenure-track faculty. Includes recommendations for improving adjuncts’ professional status and academic freedom.

Adjunct Faculty Compensation Survey (Introduction)
A survey of per-course pay at community colleges organized by state conducted by Warren Mosby and hosted on the Adjunct Nation sites (and see full survey results).

An editorial by William Pannapacker, who argues that "it has been self-evident to unbiased observers that an increasingly exploitative reliance on adjuncts severely compromises higher education." Find out why and how he makes his case.

Adjunct ERIC Clearinghouse on Clinical Schools
As outlined in their Web site, the clearinghouse "provides sources of information on professional development schools (PDSs), professional practice schools, clinical schools, partner schools, and similar institutions. ADJ/CL acquires, abstracts, and indexes literature on professional development schools for the ERIC database; produces bibliographies, periodic papers, digests, and other material on PDS issues, and conducts research on PDSs."

"Adjunct U-M Faculty Members Form Union; Pay, Job Security, Professional Development are Issues Cited by Instructors and Lecturers"

"Non-tenure-track faculty at the University of Michigan have formed a union aimed at improving pay and working conditions for lecturers and instructors. The union, called the Lecturers' Employees Organization, or LEO, filed a petition this month with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission that asks for a representation election to certify the union…"

"All Faculty Matter! A Study of Nontenure-Track Faculty at Illinois Public Colleges and Universities"
Commissioned by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (February 2002).
The report includes information on the characteristics, use, and compensation of non-tenure-track faculty, as well as on broad statewide trends by faculty type. The Study Committee found that the talents and abilities of non-tenure-track faculty are not as effectively used as they might be. The Committee's recommendations call for public institutions to formulate plans and policies to eliminate inequities among the non-tenure track and to develop fully their abilities to contribute to student learning.

American Federation of Teachers: Higher Education – Part-Time Faculty News and Events
The ATF represents one million teachers, school support staff, higher education faculty and staff, health care professionals, and state and municipal employees. "College Campuses Ripe for Unions’ Picking"
CNN.com (April 27, 2001)
Article reports details how college campuses are fertile ground for unions trying to recharge the labor movement. Renewed union efforts aimed at college campuses come as universities, driven by the bottom line, increasingly replace tenured classroom instruction with part-time faculty and graduate students.

The Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) Clearinghouse on Teacher and Teacher Education
As outlined in their Web site, ERIC is "a federally funded, nationwide information network designed to provide ready access to education literature. It is a program of the National Library of Education, U.S. Department of Education . At the heart of ERIC is the largest education-related database in the world--containing more than 1,000,000 records of journal articles, research reports, curriculum and teaching guides, conference papers, and books."

First describes the nature and extent of the change in staffing and then explores the impact of such changes on student learning.

"Improving Teaching: Tenure Is Not the Problem, It's the Solution"
Footnotes, a Publication of the AAUP (1997).
The current attack on tenure grew out of public dissatisfaction with the declining opportunity for students to study with full-time, tenure-track faculty. Parents and students, legislators, and journalists complained that "the faculty" weren’t teaching enough. Many of these critics argued further that faculty relied on tenure to evade their teaching obligations. Declining student access to quality time with the most sought-after faculty is a problem. But tenure is not the source of this problem and attacking tenure is not the solution. This essay outlines the arguments and summarizes the data that explain why. NEA Higher Education Policy on Part-Time and Temporary Faculty
Outlines the National Education Association’s policy on adjunct faculty, as approved by the NEA Executive Committee in May 2002.

"The New Academic Labor System, Corporatization, and the Renewal of Academic Citizenship"
American Association of University Professors, Richard Moser (June 12, 2001)
Examines the the "multi-tiered labor system" that has emerged in higher education from the use — and Moser would say, abuse — of adjunct faculty and the need to respond with "academic citizenship".

National Education Association (Update Vol.7 #4, September 2001)
This report discusses the role part-time faculty members play in colleges and universities. Data is based on the Department of Education's National Study of Postsecondary Faculty.

Part-Time Faculty in Higher Education Annotated Bibliography
Over two hundred listings compiled by Robert Pankin and Carla Weiss. The footnotes in the bibliography were written from the perspective of a part-time faculty member, unlike most of the literature, which is written from a management perspective. According to the authors, the purpose of the bibliography is to facilitate understanding of the meaning and implications of this major change in the structure of higher education.

A Proposal to Abolish the Part-time Faculty System in the California Community Colleges

A legislative proposal calling for the unification of the faculty in the California community colleges and create a full service faculty for the students and colleges (vs. the multi-tiered system which relies heavily on part-time faculty).

Public College and University Reports on Nontenure-track Faculty
Commissioned by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (June 2003)
This report presents a summary of the development, scope, and format of public college and university plans and initiatives in three broad policy areas: helping non-tenure-track faculty be more effective teachers, integrating non-tenure-track faculty into the campus community, and ensuring appropriate use and compensation of non-tenure-track faculty.

Explains why coalitions are important on campuses and then outlines practical tips and steps for coalition building.

"The Role of Adjunct Faculty in Higher Education"
The Montana Professor (Winter 2000)
Study reviews the development of adjunct faculty in higher education institutions and then analyzes the strengths and weakness of the adjunct system, including adjuncts’ role within the university and with full-time faculty members.

American Association of University Professors
Report calls for institutions to set specific goals in their treatment and use of part-time faculty. It also offers eight recommendations in an effort to set minimum standards designed to protect the professional standing of all faculty.

"The Vanishing Professor"
American Federation of Teachers (1998)
Report highlights the substitution of part-time for full-time employees. The first section cites data that can be used to confirm the trend away from full-time hiring. The second section explores how to make the case that the trend toward a vanishing professoriate should concern the general public. The third section surveys what higher education unions are doing to reverse job erosion through contractual negotiations and political advocacy. The last section catalogs successful efforts to support the rights of part-time faculty and other non tenure-track workers.

"Who is Teaching In U.S. College Classrooms? A Collaborative Study of Undergraduate Faculty, Fall 1999"
Coalition on the Academic Workforce (November, 2000)
Provides evidence about the use and treatment of part-time faculty in the humanities and the social sciences. Includes several tables summarizing specific results. Acording to the study, it gives evidence of the second-class status of part-time and adjunct employees in the academic workforce.

Workplace:  The Journal for Academic Labor
A webzine with a lot of quality articles on issues confronting academic workers. Published by a collective of 50 scholars in critical higher education.
