  Addison-Wesley and Benjamin Cummings History

As the market-leading publisher in the higher education market, Addison-Wesley and Benjamin Cummings have a rich history. We are proud to present this timeline of some of our more memorable milestones.

  Six decades of science publishing

  • 1942. Addison-Wesley Press is incorporated by Melbourne Wesley Cummings and Lew Addison Cummings (no relation) who use their middle names to identify the new company.
  • 1946. Mel buys out Lew's shares and remains a driving force in the company for more than four decades before his death in 1990.
  • 1968. Addison Wesley establishes Cumming's Publishing Company in Menlo Park, California to publish textbooks for two-year colleges and vocational technical schools.
  • 1977. Benjamin Cummings is formed when Addison-Wesley acquires college publisher W. A. Benjamin Company and merges them with Cummings Publishers to create the Benjamin Cummings Company.
  • 1980. The first edition of Triola's Elementary Statistics publishes.
  • 1987. The first edition of Campbell's BIOLOGY publishes.
  • 1988. Addison Wesley merges with Pearson plc.
  • 1989. The first edition of Marieb's Human Anatomy & Physiology publishes.
  • 1990. The first issue of the Strategies for Success Newsletter publishes.
  • 1994. Benjamin Cummings releases the first two InterActive Physiology CDs.
  • 1995. Addison-Wesley merges with Longman to form Addison Wesley Longman.
  • 1996. Addison Wesley Longman acquires HarperCollins Educational Publishers and HarperCollins College and also forms the Computer and Engineering Publishing Group. The first annual Benjamin Cummings Allied Health Scholarship is offered.
  • 1998. The merger of Simon & Schuster's and Addison Wesley Longman's education businesses results in Pearson Education, the world's leading educational publishing business.
  • 2001. Addison-Wesley Higher Education is formed, which includes four imprints: Addison-Wesley, Allyn & Bacon, Benjamin Cummings, and Longman. A sales force specializing in the hardside products of Addison-Wesley and Benjamin Cummings is formed.
  • 2002. Addison-Wesley Higher Education begins publishing the Prentice Hall anatomy & physiology titles under the Benjamin Cummings imprint.
  • 2007. Addison-Wesley Higher Education adds the Prentice Hall biology and physics & astronomy titles to its lists, becoming the exclusive publisher of biology and physics & astronomy for Pearson Education. Biology titles appear under the Benjamin Cummings imprint; and the physics & astronomy titles appear under the Addison-Wesley imprint.
